Note: Meghan states in the introduction of this interview that Loyda Perez is one of the co-founders of El Refugio. Loyda was not one of the co-founders of El Refugio. She became a volunteer a year after El Refugio was created.
Loyda Perez was born in Bolivia, South America. She was raised by her mother and went to a private Christian school. She moved to the United States to pursue more education opportunities. Her interests in helping immigrants began when she came to the U.S. and she met some friends from the Hispanic community where she learned about the struggle of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. She became a volunteer for El Refugio a year after the organization was founded. She was one of the first Spanish volunteers for El Refugio.
